I recently received the following image scan and statement from a Cranbrook classmate about a long forgotten project I did in 1995:
“This piece was part of an auction at the American Institute of Design (AIGA) in New York, where a select group of designers were invited to create designs under the theme, “Valentine’s Day.” All funds collected were donated back to the organization. Fellow colleague and friend, Jan Uretsky, and I bid on your work. Jan won, and it hung in his office until he died this past spring, 2016. Jan left it for me, along with boxes of design books. The books have been going to Pratt students with an exlibris glued into each inside front cover dedicated to Jan. Your piece now hangs on my wall.”

My design (called layout) work as a twenty year old in Detroit back in 1959. Front and back of a pharmaceutical promotion card that would have gone to doctors from the Parke Davis Overseas Division. I can’t remember the reason (there was one) that I had the product name slightly cropped off the bottom. Note the postal zones the city was still divided into at that time.

From 1989. Adding collage bits and drawing on Polaroid discards has long been a practice of mine. Notice the title on the top page calls them “little…desktop Polaroid collages.” How could I have imaged “posting” them on a “desktop computer” 25 or more years into the future !

The grubby wax paste-up for a piece posted the other day. Slightly distorted with xerox scans, individual letters put down and spaced, and rexeroxed with negative setting (and additions) for final. If you are really interested in this tedious process from the past, click on it for a detailed enlargement.
